Nestled in the heart of Provence, the Vaucluse is a department where the charm of towns and villages meets the natural beauty of the landscapes. Known for its quintessentially Provençal panoramas and cultural heritage, this region is rich in historic towns and villages that seem frozen in time, offering an ideal living environment for those dreaming of a peaceful retirement or a life in the sun.

Amid rolling vineyards, lavender fields, and ancient stone structures, the Vaucluse invites you to explore its most beautiful villages, each with its unique character and story to tell. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful haven or a place alive with local traditions, you’ll find a little slice of paradise here where you can settle down.

The most beautiful towns and villages of the Vaucluse

1. Avignon

It's impossible not to start this list with Avignon, the largest city in the Vaucluse, famous for its Palais des Papes, its art festival and its bridge (yes, the one of song!). A vibrant city with a rich historical heritage, Avignon is ideal for those who want to combine culture, history and living comfort. Very accessible, especially thanks to its TGV station, festive, lively and with a real estate market as varied as it is interesting, the city is the ideal place for those who wish to stay in an urban setting but still have a foot in nature.

2. Vaison-la-Romaine

Vaison-la-Romaine is part of the ranking of cities where it is good to live in France, a ranking based on a multitude of criteria including quality of life, safety, local taxes, transport, shops and services, health, etc. Famous for its Roman remains, the city combines history, culture and nature, offering a pleasant living environment with reasonable property prices and a varied offer.

3. Le Pontet

Ideally located near Avignon, Le Pontet is a pleasant town with plenty of trails for walking, running or cycling, and plenty of sports facilities. The city is well connected by public transport and has all the necessary amenities! A point that comes up among the inhabitants: "We feel good there thanks to the current municipality which has made it a point of honour to make Le Pontet a municipality where you feel safe at all times."

4. Apt

Located in the heart of the Luberon, Apt is a very pretty town, renowned for its historic centre made up of cobbled streets and small shady squares. The town is known for its quiet way of life, punctuated by its Provençal market and the activities of the town. When you leave its walls, you immediately find yourself in the middle of lavender and olive groves, in an exuberant nature that is ideal for walking. Property prices are more affordable than in some other popular villages in the Vaucluse.

5. Sablet

"We want to live there. It is a village of 1200 inhabitants where you can find everything, a grocery store, bakeries, butchers, a health centre, a stadium and other activities... and there's even a lake!" we can read on the website Ville Idéal. Sablet is as well equipped as a town while having the sweetness of life of a village, perched in the heart of magnificent vineyards and with a view of the Dentelles de Mont-Mirail.

6. Pernes-les-Fontaines

Pernes is a pretty village in which life is particularly good: thanks to its many sports and cultural associations, its renowned crafts, its charming town centre and its pleasant pace, it is an ideal town to settle in the south, in the countryside, while being only 10 minutes from Isle sur la Sorgue and Carpentras,  35 minutes from Avignon and 1 hour from Marseille!

7. Gordes

Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Gordes is undeniably the jewel of the Luberon. With its cobbled streets and stone houses, it seduces buyers looking for authenticity and the ideal Provence. But the best thing here is to find a house on the outskirts of the city, in the middle of the fields... A renovated farmhouse with a swimming pool, for example! Prices are high, but the investment is worth it.

Conclusion

Moving to the Vaucluse means choosing a peaceful life where the sweetness of Provence blends with a preserved natural environment. The villages, with their cobbled streets, colourful markets and breathtaking panoramas, offer much more than just a residence: they offer a real return to the roots. Whether you are attracted by the friendliness of a village like Gordes or the calm of Sablet, the Vaucluse promises you an incomparable quality of life.
